Both XZ2's are somewhat surprising with 'only' one camera on the back. Sony is therefore against the trend of implementing multiple cameras. That also immediately limits the creative possibilities, because you stay tied to a fixed focal length of 25 millimeters, and beautiful bokeh effects are more difficult to obtain. No optical zoom here, and even image stabilization is limited. You get a lot more megapixels from Sony, 19 to be exact, but the aperture is maximum f / 2. The latter inevitably finds itself in situations with little light: the ISO goes up considerably, and the result is dark images with far too much noise. Despite the fact that these Sonys may not have the most impressive camera system, they do seem to work pleasantly in practice. I have always found the special camera button a good idea. HDR provides a higher dynamic range, and you notice especially during moments where a very bright light is visible in the image, such as a flash of light. The screen of the XZ2's also supports HDR itself, so the match is certain. And you can use HDR content on Amazon Prime Video or Netflix, for example.

Still, the effect of HDR on a Smartphone screen remains rather limited, I think. The added value of HDR is much greater on a large TV. Moreover, the XZ2, as you can see on the video below, makes far from fantastic video images (4K HDR recording).

As said, the XZ2s have only one rear camera that they have to use. The bokeh mode therefore works by taking two photographs, each focusing on a different part of the image. By adding them together, the cloudy background is created. The effect is more than decent, and from the camera app you can fine-tune how strong the bokeh effect should be.

Software

Pre-installed apps

During my test period of over two months, Sony Authorized mobile service center in bangalore received at least four system updates on both devices. Unfortunately, there was no upgrade to Android 8.1. You will therefore have to (temporarily) make peace with Android 8.0. That is a bit sad, because some competitors, out-of-the-box, are already available with the latest Android version. On the other hand, Sony immediately promises an upgrade to Android 9.0 Pie and that is something to look forward to.

Repairtech is that Sony installs a lot of superfluous software from its own stable, especially PlayStation and various Xperia apps, in advance, just like a trial version of AVG security app and various Amazon apps. Moreover, the Compact costs a lot less than the regular XZ2. Sony is doing a lot of good with the new XZ2s. And yet, in my opinion, it will be difficult to distinguish. The design of these phones is subdued and in the case of the XZ2 Compact even a bit banal. In addition, I stay on my hunger when it comes to special opportunities or extras. Those few gimmicks that are there, do not justify a purchase. The biggest disappointment is the camera. Especially those who like to getservice from any Sony authorized mobile service center in tin factory and who want to creative with photo and video, should know that both the XZ2 and the XZ2 Compact are passed by the competition on all sides.
